Customs Clearance of Shipment
When you receive a shipment (letter or parcel) that requires customs clearance, you can do it yourself using the Customs' e-services for private import declarations. This service is only applicable to shipments sent to private individuals. Domestic shipments from e-commerce retailers with a tax border number are not subject to this type of customs clearance.

How it works
When you receive a notification of arrival from Åland Post, informing you that your shipment has arrived (either as a paper notice in your mailbox or by SMS), it will include instructions on how to complete the customs clearance. Once the customs clearance is completed, Customs will automatically notify Åland Post, and we will then release or deliver the shipment to you.
If you are unable to use the Customs' e-services yourself, another private individual can assist you with the customs clearance.
Good to keep in mind:
- When shopping online, contact the company you wish to purchase from to find out how they handle VAT for shipments to Åland.
- Remember, you are responsible for the order and communication with the company.
- On My Page, you can request SMS notifications and change the pickup location for your parcels.
- You can complete customs clearance for free via the Customs' e-services.
- You can track your shipment on Åland Post's website.
- You can pick up or receive your shipment only after the customs clearance has been completed.
Customs Clearance of Gifts
For gifts worth up to €45 exchanged between private individuals within the EU, you do not need to pay VAT if you complete the customs clearance via the Customs' e-services. Please note that certain exceptions may apply. You can also contact Customs for information regarding the contents and value of the shipment. Gifts containing tobacco, alcohol, or perfume must always be declared for customs.

If you do not wish to do the customs clearance yourself using the Customs' e-services, you can hire Åland Post to do it for you. We offer customs clearance services according to this price list. Please note that VAT collected by Customs and any applicable customs duties are additional charges.
